Frequently Asked Questions

Beef FAQs

How can I order beef from you?

It's easy! Simply ‘fill your cart’ and place your order online, and at checkout, you’ll have three options to choose from:

  1. On-farm pickup. Upon checkout, we’ll let you know our current weekly pick-up hours, or you can find them on our Events page.

  2. At-home delivery. We have a weekly delivery route for our customers living in the Clear Lake, Mason City, Nora Springs, Rock Falls, and Plymouth, Iowa areas. Upon checkout, we’ll follow up with you to schedule delivery. You can also find our current delivery hours on our Events page.

  3. Special arrangements. If you need special arrangements, email laura@skyviewbeef.com and we’ll see how we can help.

  4. After placing your order, you’ll be prompted to choose one of these three options, and Laura will follow up with you to confirm details.

Do you ship your beef?

Currently, we can only offer on-farm pick-up and delivery to our customers who live within our delivery route areas.

However, we hope to expand and offer shipping in the future. The best way to get updates on this is to join our email newsletter. We’ll let you know here first as soon as shipping becomes available.

How much meat am I getting when I order a half or quarter of beef?

A good estimate is around 180-200 pounds for a quarter and 360-400 pounds for a half. Every animal is unique, so exact weights may vary—but that just means you're getting a one-of-a-kind cut.

How should I handle my beef purchase?

As soon as you receive your beef, place it in your freezer or refrigerator. Product placed in the refrigerator should be used within 2-3 days to maintain optimum freshness. Frozen product should be used within twenty-four months of the purchase date.

What types of cuts will I get in my beef order?

Great question! Below is a list of cuts that result from a typical half-beef processed at Elma Locker. So for a quarter, expect about ½ of these amounts.

  • 16 T-Bone Steaks (1” thick) OR New York Strips and Filets (1” thick)
  • 16 Ribeye Steaks (1”thick)
  • 12 Sirloin Steaks (1” thick)
  • 8 Chuck Roasts (3 lb)
  • 4 Arm Roasts (3 lb)
  • 80-120 lb Ground Beef

Where will my beef be processed, and is there an additional cost for transport?

We proudly partner with Elma Locker & Grocery in Elma, Iowa, for processing. They've been experts in custom meat processing since 2006, and we've trusted them with our own family's beef for over a decade.

Transport to Elma Locker is included in your beef price.

If you’d prefer a different processor, we’re happy to arrange transport at $1.00 per mile from our farm gate to your chosen location.

For alternative processors, full beef purchases are required instead of quarters or halves. You can always coordinate with a friend to split the beef, or your processor may have options to help.

Why doesn’t SkyView Farms process their own meat?

We’ve elected to work with Elma Locker for several reasons:

#1 – They do great work! We’ve learned from experience that every processor has their own way of doing things, from style of cut to packaging and storage. Elma Locker provides the total service experience and puts out an excellent product.

#2 – They can provide specialty processing that we wouldn’t be able to offer with their variety of smoked and dried meat products.

#3 – Certified processors like Elma Locker undergo stringent health inspections on a regular basis to maintain their certified status. When we process with Elma Locker, we feel confident that your meat is always kept in a clean environment and at constant, safe temperatures.

Our main goal is to provide the highest quality meat product possible, so we focus on what we do best - raising quality animals - and leave the rest to our trusted partners at Elma Locker.

What steps do you take to prioritize animal welfare?

Cattle on SkyView Farms spend the first seven months of life beside their mothers on pasture. In the winter, they are transported back to the farm, where there is proper shelter and clean, dry bedding for protection against harsh Iowa winters.

Calves join other similarly-aged calves so they may be fed a proper diet of protein, energy vitamins, and minerals. At each stage of life, we monitor health and well-being and maintain partnerships with a team of veterinarians and a nutritionist to assist when needed.

We provide our herd with clean, spacious pastures, fresh water, nutrient-rich forage and home-raised feed, and adequate shelter and protection from extreme weather.

We practice low-stress handling techniques, ensure humane transport, and treat our animals with dignity and respect from birth to harvest.

Why isn’t your beef labeled grass-fed?

Our goal at SkyView Farms is to deliver juicy, tender prime beef that allows families to cook restaurant-quality dishes at home.

While our cattle spend the majority of their lives on grass, North Iowa winters are much too harsh to rely on grazing year-round. Our past customers have agreed that the best approach for maximum cattle comfort and the highest-quality beef product with incredible flavor is a diet mix of grass and grains.

What makes SkyView Market different from a farmer’s market or grocery store

We know you have a lot of options when it comes to buying food, and we’re grateful you’re considering shopping with us.

Our favorite thing about SkyView is that it’s not just local food, it’s local food that’s set up to be easy and accessible for busy families.

For example, in the Market, you can buy our beef fajita strips, a fajita concentrate from a local dietitian, and sourdough bread or tortillas from a local bakery. In other words – we give you recipes and products that make serving your family an all-local meal *doable*, even on a busy weeknight.

We take great pride in pairing complimenting local foods together, so you have all the ingredients you need to get a meal on the table they’ll love.

By giving you the option to order online, you can shop anytime it’s convenient for you, and we’ll deliver your order or put you on our list for pick-up hours. Order online!
